Hawks Nest – where the ocean awaits

The two main beaches at Hawks Nest are Bennett’s Beach and Jimmy’s Beach. Bennett’s Beach is a 14.3 kilometre stretch of sand that runs from Hawks Nest up to Dark Point in the north. It is primarily this beach that makes the town a well known surf destination. Jimmy’s Beach faces the calmer waters of Port Stephens. It is ideal for those who prefer a more sedate swim in crystal-clear waters and is often preferred by families with younger children.

About the town

The town still has its original shopping precinct with a village atmosphere. Aside from the cafes, newsagent, chemist, post office, bakery and supermarket, the town has a wide range of facilities. Enjoy clubs, restaurants and bars, or make use of one of the local parks. There are boat ramps, a small library and even a thespian society (we are not without our culture). Hawks Nest also offers a wide range of accommodation types with something to suit every budget.

The Geographical Names Board Register states that Hawks Nest is named after a large hawk’s nest in a tree on the Myall River that was used as a navigational aid. Hawks Nest is also featured on the Destination NSW website.

Yacaaba headland forms the northern headland of Port Stephens. It sits at the southern tip of Bennetts’ Beach and is a distinct landmark that rises to 210 metres from what is otherwise flat coastal land. There is a track (albeit sometimes overgrown) that leads to the top of the headland, offering adventurers a little challenge.
